People often call and ask me to do an addition to their existing home, only to discover that in many cases, their needs can be effectively and economically met within the house's existing footprint. It's amazing how much space gets wasted or improperly used in many of the houses I've worked on. All that being said, there are times when there is simply no alternative to adding more square footage to a house. It has always been my goal with additions to have them improve the look and flow of the whole house, such that your guests say: "Wow! What a gorgeous house! Did you say you had some work done? What did you do?" If an addition draws too much attention to itself, or looks like it fell from the sky and rolled to a stop against the house, I see it as real failure.
